North Cyprus internet - cable broadband
The face of North Cyprus internet changed when in April 2007, The Internet Club made a massive investment in internet hardware. Their whole network backbone and infrastructure was replaced at a total cost of £65,000. The new hardware pushed speeds on their network from 11 Mbps to 54 Mbps.
"It was the right time for us, we were small enough to be able to afford to make the change but big enough to be able to fund the change-over to a 54 Mbps network. The difference that it made to the operating speed of our network and internet connections was incredible" said one of the principles of TIC.
In addition to this, TIC agreed a contract for the supply and installation of a fiber optic cable, connecting them directly to Turkey and Europe.
"This was a very important development for all of the Internet Club Members. Over the 2 previous years, the Internet Club's internet connections were supplied, as indeed were most of the prominent players in the field, by connection to a satellite through a dish. The problem with this type of connection however, is the amount of time that the signal takes to travel to and from the satellite or, the gateway to the internet. Also, bandwidth delivered by satellite is very expensive because of the overhead cost of putting a satellite into space. Internet service providers with this type of connection are forced to tightly manage the bandwidth that each user receives. This results in slower internet access speeds."
"In the UK and the rest of Europe, fiber optic cables have been used to deliver internet for a number of years but have only recently been introduced to the TRNC. Commercial satellite systems are fine where there is no other alternative. Multiple internet connections can be supplied through single earth stations. These connections are then forwarded on to individual users. This type of internet connection is perfectly acceptable in most cases but with users wanting faster and faster speeds, there is only one way to go - fiber optic cable with the ability to support thousands of users with multiple megabit connectivity."
